Accuracy of Patellofemoral Kinematics Using Multi-plane 3d Shape Registration as a Precursor to Patellofemoral Joint Contact Mechanics

چکیده
INTRODUCTION Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is a debilitating knee impairment and one of the most common causes of orthopaedic related physician visits each year [1] in the general as well as athletic populations. Despite highly concentrated research efforts, the etiology of the pain is not fully understood. Patellofemoral (PF) pain has been demonstrated to be associated with altered PF joint mechanics; however, an actual variation in joint contact stresses has not been established. These variations in contact stresses are key to improving clinical insights from which subject-specific rehabilitation or surgical interventions can be devised.

Introduction & Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of strengthening the abductor and external rotator of the hip joint muscles on pain, thigh muscle strength, and lower limb kinematics in volleyball players with patellofemoral complications. Materials and Methods: Twenty-four volleyball players with patellofemoral pain were randomly divided into the experimental and co...
متن کاملThe effects of medialization and anteromedialization of the tibial tubercle on patellofemoral mechanics and kinematics.
BACKGROUND Medialization and anteromedialization of the tibial tubercle are used to correct patellar subluxation in adults. PURPOSE To compare the effects of the 2 osteotomies on patellofemoral joint contact pressures and kinematics. STUDY DESIGN Controlled laboratory study. METHODS Tibial tubercle osteotomies were performed on 10 cadaveric human knees. The knees were tested between 0 deg...
متن کاملNormal patellofemoral kinematic patterns during daily activities in dogs
BACKGROUND Patellar abnormalities are a common cause of pain and lameness in dogs; however, in vivo the relative motion between the femur and patella in dogs is not well described. The objective of this study was to define normal in vivo sagittal plane patellofemoral kinematics in three axes of motion using non-invasive methods. We hypothesized patellofemoral alignment in the sagittal plane wou...
متن کاملUsing real-time MRI to quantify altered joint kinematics in subjects with patellofemoral pain and to evaluate the effects of a patellar brace or sleeve on joint motion.
Abnormal patellofemoral joint motion is a possible cause of patellofemoral pain, and patellar braces are thought to alleviate pain by restoring normal joint kinematics. We evaluated whether females with patellofemoral pain exhibit abnormal patellofemoral joint kinematics during dynamic, weight-bearing knee extension and assessed the effects of knee braces on patellofemoral motion. Real-time mag...
متن کاملCorrelating femoral shape with patellar kinematics in patients with patellofemoral pain.
The etiology of patellofemoral pain is likely related to pathological femoral shape and soft-tissue restraints imbalance. These factors may result in various maltracking patterns in patients with patellofemoral pain. Thus, we hypothesized that femoral shape influences patellofemoral kinematics, but that this influence differs between kinematically unique subgroups of patients with patellofemora...
